Healey and Johnson on Women’s National Team winter meetings
Saskatoon’s Amy Johnson and North Battlefords’s Heather Healey were announced along with 40 others by Baseball Canada as part of the Women’s National Team Winter Meetings roster.
The Winter Meetings will introduce the 2024 season, with a goal to represent Canada at the IX WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup Finals from July 28 to August 3, 2024, in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
The meetings will focus on skill development, strength conditioning and mental skills.
Norsten and Canada finish fourth in HSBC SVNS season
Waldheim’s Carissa Norsten and the Canadian women’s rugby 7s team won three of their four games and took fourth place in the first stop of the 2024 HSBC SVNS season in Dubai.
In the first match of the day, Canada lost to France 29-0 but made a comeback in the second match against the United States, winning 15-10, before dominating Spain 38-12 and earning their place in the quarter-finals.
Canada played to qualify for semifinals on the second day, defeating Ireland 14-12 to earn their spot, but then lost to New Zealand 21-19, which sent Canada to play for bronze. The Canadian team concluded their time in Dubai in a second match against France and took fourth place, losing 26-5.
Norsten and Team Canada will make their next stop December 9-10 in Cape Town, South Africa.
Team Nancy Martin attends 2023 Everest Canadian Seniors Curling Championship
Martensville’s Team Nancy Martin joins Canada’s top curling teams in Vernon, BC from December 3-9 for the 2023 Everest Canadian Senior Curling Championship.
The tournament is divided into two pools with seven teams, competing round-robin with the top four teams advancing. In the first draw, Saskatchewan’s Nancy Martin, Deanna Doig, Nancy Inglis and Cathy Inglis defeated Newfoundland and Labrador 13-2, picking up their 13 points in the first four ends. Team Saskatchewan took the win in their following two draws and beat British Colombia 9-2 and New Brunswick 6-4.
Saskatchewan is top of Pool A and will take on Northern Ontario next.
Ens and Newkirk attend Ken Demchuk International Invitational Meet
Saskatoon Lasers’ Nikita Ens and Shelby Newkirk attended the Ken Demchuk International Invitational meet from December 1-3 in Surrey, BC, a qualifier for the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris.
Swimmers had to hit the minimum qualifying standard to help determine the size of the Canadian swimming team for the Games and to be invited as an individual.
Ens won the S3 200-metre freestyle race with a 5:05.06 time, the women’s S3 50-m backstroke with 1:14.12 and the S3 100-m freestyle with a 2:33.44 time.
Newkirk won the SB5 100-m breaststroke in 2:06.05 and the S6 100-m freestyle with a 1:24.75 time.
Kos represents Canada on International stage
Regina lawn bowler, Jordan Kos is at the 2023 IIBC World Under 25 Singles & Mixed Pairs Championship from December 4-8, in Scotland.
Kos was invited to represent Canada after winning the 2023 Canadian Youth Championship in July.
Fish finishes fourth at ISU World Speed Cup
Graeme Fish, who hails from Moose Jaw, made his third stop in the series of ISU World Speed Cup competitions, in Stavanger, Norway.
On December 2, Fish finished fourth in the 10,000-metre men division B race with a 13:20.55 time and 25 points.
