Sask. Swimmers add medals to their count

Three Saskatchewan swimmers found their way to the podium at the Speedo Canadian Swimming Open, which took place from April 9-11 in Edmonton.

Saskatoon Para swimmer, Shelby Newkirk claimed gold in the women’s 100-metre backstroke event in 1:25.41 seconds and the 50-m freestyle in 35.09 seconds. She also set a Canadian record (SB5) in addition to finishing third in the women’s 100-m breaststroke with a time of 1:59.49 seconds.

Meanwhile, Prince Albert’s Ali Diehl claimed silver in the (SB9) 100-m breaststroke event with a time of 1:23.25 seconds. Diehl competed in two other events with top ten finishes.

On the men’s side, Saskatoon-born Blake Tierney added two silvers to his collection after swimming to a 54.94 second time in the 100-m backstroke event and 2:00.65 time in the 200-m backstroke. He also finished eighth in the men’s 100-metre freestyle event.

Senft joins Team Canada on the rugby pitch

Gabrielle Senft, who hails from Regina, joined the Canadian women’s rugby team for their first game of the 2026 Pacific Four Series on April 11.

After a delayed start to the match, Canada dominated Australia 24-0 and will now look ahead to their next game against New Zealand on April 17.

Three Sask. Divers at 2026 Canada Cup of Diving

Saskatchewan was represented by three divers at the 2026 Canada Cup of Diving from April 9-12 in Windsor, Ontario.

Margo Erlam, who trains out of Saskatoon, secured bronze in the women’s 3-metre event with 330.65 points and silver alongside her partner, Sonya Palkhivala in the 3-m synchro event with 284.91 points.

On the men’s side, Saskatoon’s Kash Tarasoff dove to ninth place in the 10-m event with 368.60 points.

Meanwhile, Rylan Wiens of Pike Lake finished fifth with 377.85 points in the men’s 10-m repechage event and did not advance to the final.

Anholt, O’Leary to assistant coach at 2026 IIHF U18 Men’s World Championships

Two Saskatchewan coaches will be packing their bags to join Team Canada at the 2026 IIHF U18 Men’s World Championships from April 22 to May 2, in Bratislava and Trencin, Slovakia.

Prince Albert’s Matt Anholt will join Moose Jaw’s Mark O’Leary as assistant coach for the duration of the event.

The athlete roster is yet to be announced.
