Numerous Saskatchewan athletes at Bell Track and Field Trials
The Bell Track and Field Trials featured the athletic abilities of numerous Saskatchewan athletes from June 26-30 in Montreal.
With the Saskatoon Track & Field Club, Savannah Sutherland finished third in the women’s 400-metre event with a 52.00 second time. Michelle Harrison finished second with a 12.99 second time in the women’s 100-m hurdles. Jennifer Weber (women’s senior shot put), Michael Hussey (men’s U20 800-m) and Liam Oster (men’s U20 110-m hurdles) finished in fifth place.
Ashlyn Renneberg from the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, placed first in the women’s Para ambulatory javelin throw with a 28.9-m distance.
From Cyclones Athletics, Ayva Delainey finished third in the women’s wheelchair 200-m race with a 49.43 seconds time. Maitlan Knoke claimed first place in the men’s wheelchair discus throw with 24.91-m and men’s wheelchair shot put with 10.08-m, while finishing third in the men’s wheelchair javelin throw with a distance of 18.75-m.
Anicka Newell, who has ties to Saskatoon, finished second in the senior women’s pole vault category with her top height reaching 4.38 meters.
Based on their results, Harrison, Newell and Sutherland solidified their spots for the 2024 Olympic Games and were announced as members of Team Canada on July 2. This will be Newell’s third Olympic appearance, while Harrison and Sutherland will both be making their debut.

Shyiak and D’Souza with Canada at World Aquatics U16 Championships
Regina’s Clara Milleker Shyiak has joined Canada’s water polo team at the 2024 World Aquatics Women’s U16 Championships from June 28-July 4 in Manisa, Turkey.
In Group B preliminary action, Canada dominated Zimbabwe 13-0 before falling to Greece 22-3. Canada faced Croatia in a crossover match and was defeated 11-7 but made a come back in classifications against South Africa, taking an 8-6 win.
Canada will look ahead to their final match against Germany on July 4.
Ethan D’Souza, who attended the University of Regina, joined as support staff.
McEwen rink receives Brier pre-qualification
Saskatoon’s Team Mike McEwen is one of six teams — three for the Brier and three for the Scotties Tournament of Hearts — that have received a prequalification for the 2025 competitions.
McEwen finished second at the 2024 Montana’s Brier in Regina.
It’s the first time that teams who are not reigning champions have pre-qualified a spot in their Scotties Tournament of Hearts or Brier competitions.
In April 2023, Curling Canada updated the pre-qualification methods to increase the number of pre-qualified teams from two to three by including teams from the Canadian Team Rankings System.
Chapman attends Pan-American wrestling Championships
Elizabeth Chapman, of Saskatoon, competed at the U17 Pan-American Wrestling Championships from June 27-29 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Chapman finished in eighth after being defeated by Cuba’s Aneishka Santos Baez 5-0 in the 49-kilogram weight class quarterfinals.
Klimchuk and Canada prepare for Summer Tests 2024
Regina’s Matthew Klimchuk was selected to Canada’s roster for the upcoming Summer Tests rugby match against Scotland and Romania in Ottawa.
Klimchuk and the 33 other selected Team Canada players have begun their path to Rugby World Cup qualification.
