Kleiter receives Curling Canada scholarship
Saskatoon’s Madison Kleiter has been announced as one of 11 recipients of a $2,500 post-secondary education scholarship through Curling Canada’s For the Love of Curling program. Kleiter, a kinesiology student at the University of Saskatchewan, was among those chosen from a record 93 applications.
Clark, Shirley invited to Hockey Canada fall camp
Emily Clark and Sophie Shirley, both originally from Saskatoon, are among 46 players who have been invited to Hockey Canada’s national women’s team September camp which is taking place this week in Ontario. The camp wraps up Saturday and will serve as part of the national team’s selection process for the 2023-24 season.
Clark was previously part of the Canadian squad that won gold at the 2023 IIHF women’s world championship, while Shirley was part of Canada’s national team development roster that played a three-game series against the United States in August 2022.
Nickel headed to wrestling worlds
Wrestling Canada Lutte has announced that Aleah Nickel will represent her country at the 2023 Senior World Championships, which are scheduled to begin Saturday in Belgrade, Serbia.
Nickel, who was raised in Swift Current but now trains out of Edmonton, will compete in the 65-kilogram women’s division with a chance to qualify for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris on the line. All athletes who finish in the top five at worlds in an Olympic weight class will qualify for next year’s Games.
Senft named to Canada’s roster for international rugby showdown with England
Gabrielle Senft of Regina is one of 32 rugby players who have been selected to the Canadian women’s 15s team for a pair of test matches against world No. 1 England later this month. Canada will face the host team on Sept. 23 and 30 as a tune-up for the inaugural WXV tournament – an international competition featuring 18 of the world’s top national teams competing across three tiers.
Lightfoot to compete for para badminton gold in Santiago
Regina’s Wyatt Lightfoot has been named to Canada’s para badminton team for the upcoming ParaPan Am Games, which are scheduled for Nov. 22-26 in Santiago, Chile. No. 15-ranked Lightfoot will go for gold in singles competition. He previously represented Canada at the 2019 Games in Lima, Peru.
