Three Sask. hockey players named to national women’s development camp

Hockey Canada announced the rosters for Canada’s national women’s development selection camp, which includes five individuals with ties to Saskatchewan.

From Aug. 3-8, Regina’s Ashley Messier, Saskatoon’s Alida Korte and Prince Albert’s Stryker Zablocki will attend on and off ice training sessions, as well as three red-white games for additional practice. Sheldon Goertzen and Jason Weber, both of Saskatoon, will join as goaltending coach and strength and conditioning coach, respectively.

The camp will help determine who will be selected to Canada’s National Women’s U-18 Team, which will be announced Aug. 9 ahead of a three-game series against the United States from Aug. 12-15, in Richmond B.C.

Canada opens 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup with win

The 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup has commenced in Edmonton with Team Canada opening competition with a 7-3 win over Switzerland.

The Canadians, which features Kayden Stroeder, of Saskatoon, Maddox Schultz, who hails from Regina and Estevan’s Boston Tait will now look ahead to their next game against Slovakia.

Prince Albert assistant coach, Ryan McDonald, will help the team for the duration of the tournament.

Sask. collects medals at Commonwealth Games

The 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland wrapped with Closing Ceremonies on Aug. 2 after 11 days of action.

Five of the seven athletes who represented Saskatchewan’s contingent at the Games brought home medals, including:

• Jordan Carroll – Gymnastics, gold
• Etta Love- Weightlifting, bronze
• Kyrell Sopotyk – 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball, bronze
• Garrett Ostepchuk – 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball, bronze
• Savannah Sutherland- Athletics, bronze
