Sweeting brings home bronze from worlds
Maryfield’s Val Sweeting is a back-to-back bronze medallist at the Women’s World Curling Championships.
Sweeting, who plays third alongside Kerri Einarson’s rink, helped Team Canada beat Sweden 8-5 in a rematch of last year’s third place game. Canada got out to a 6-1 lead by the fifth end and did not look back, en route to the victory.
Sweeting and company will represent Canada once again next year at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

Saskatchewan 1 wins national curling championship
At the 2023 Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championships in Moose Jaw, it was a hometown team bringing home the gold medal.
Saskatchewan 1, featuring skip Gil Dash, third Marie Wright, second Darwin Bender and lead Moose Gibson, beat Northern Ontario’s Douglas Dean 6-2 on Friday afternoon to win the 2023 championship.
The Saskatchewan team stole points in the first three ends to take a 4-0 lead. They held a 6-1 lead through six ends and then eventually would run Northern Ontario out of rocks. For Dash, Wright and Bender, it is yet another national title after winning in 2012, 2016 and 2018 while Gibson was part of those teams in 2016 and 2018.

Rice, Chavez on the ITF junior tour
On the International Tennis Federation junior tour, two Regina products were in action at the J300 San Diego tournament.
Keegan Rice beat American Mark Krupkin in the first round 6-3, 7-6, but then Rice fell to American Nikita Filin in the second round.
Teah Chavez was also in action in San Diego, however she was defeated by American Julieta Pareja 5-7, 4-6 in the opening round.
