February 2, 2026
For 30 years, February has marked Black History Month in Canada, which celebrates the contributions that Black Canadians have made and continue to make, in all sectors of society, including sport.
From grassroot to high-performance athletes who represent the country on the world stage, Black Canadian athletes continuously represent athletic success in all levels of sport. Canadian Sport Centre Saskatchewan celebrates the achievements and is committed to diverse storytelling through the lens of sport both throughout February, and all year long. We will be sharing information and resources from organizations across the country to help better spread awareness and understanding of the month’s importance.

This year’s theme for Black History Month as announced by the Government of Canada is: “Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.” The theme recognizes the enduring legacy of Black Canadians, whose creativity, innovation and resilience have shaped our past, influence our present and will continue to inspire future generations. This year, the theme celebrates three decades of Black History Month in Canada.
From the likes of Donovan Bailey, Perdita Felicien and Willlie O’Ree, to a new generation of athletes including Alphonso Davies, Kadeisha Buchanan, Damian Warner, Sarah Nurse and Andre De Grasse, Black Canadians are responsible for breaking barriers, serving as role models for young athletes and providing significant contributions to Canadian sport.
