Keegan Rice, Teah Chavez at Indian Wells
Regina’s Keegan Rice competed in the International Tennis Federation J300 Indian Wells event last week, narrowly losing out in the quarterfinals to the eventual champion.
After receiving a first round bye, Rice beat Krish Arora 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 in the second round and then Dylan Charlap 6-1, 6-1 in the third round but lost to American Cooper Woestendick 5-7, 6-7 in the quarterfinal. Woestendick would go on to win the tournament.
Meanwhile, fellow Regina athlete Teah Chavez fell 6-1, 6-0 in the first round to USA’s Jessica Bernales. Chavez also partnered up with fellow Canadian Ellie Daniels in doubles action but lost in the second round to Americans Tyran Caterina Grant and Iva Jovic.

Saskatoon’s Shirley sisters win national championship
Saskatoon sisters Sophie and Grace Shirley, teammates on the Wisconsin Badgers women’s hockey team, upset No. 1 seed Ohio State to win the NCAA national title game in Duluth, Minnesota on Sunday.
It was the seventh championship in the Women’s Frozen Four for the Badgers, who won the championship game 1-0.

Kurt Oatway narrowly misses podium at World Cup Finals
At the FIS Para Alpine Ski World Cup Finals in Cortina, Italy, Kurt Oatway, out of the Regina Alpine Race Team, finished in fourth place in the men’s sitting giant slalom race on Mar. 15.
On Mar. 16, in the second sitting giant slalom race, he finished in fifth place. Earlier this month, Oatway won bronze at the World Cup finals in Sella Nevea, Italy.

Sweeting, Canada at the World Women’s Curing Championships
Team Canada, featuring Maryfield’s Val Sweeting, are off to a good start at the World Women’s Curling Championship in Sweden.
The group, skipped by Manitoba’s Kerri Einarson, is 4-2 through six matches after losing to undefeated Switzerland on Tuesday. The gold medal game is set for Mar. 26.

Sask at the national wheelchair curling championship
There are two Saskatchewan-based teams in action this week at the Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship in Moose Jaw.
Saskatchewan #1 features Gil Dash, Marie Wright, Darwin Bender and Moose Gibson. Saskatchewan #2 is made up of Rodney Pederson, Stewart McKeown, Sheryl Pederson and Russell Whitsitt.
The championship game is set for Mar. 25.

Sask at the Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Championships
There’s a large Saskatchewan contingent in action this week at the Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Sudbury, Ont.
Of the 32 teams, four are based in Saskatchewan, including the provincial champion duo of Adam and Stephanie Bukurak, of Regina. Other teams that qualified include Saskatoon’s Patty Hersikorn and Steve Laycock, Chaelynn Kitz and Brayden Stewart out of Wawota and Tyrel Griffith & Nancy Martin of Martensville. Saskatchewan product Kirk Muyres is also curling alongside Laura Walker out of Alberta.
The gold medal game is set for Mar. 26

Albers, Canada at the World Baseball Classic
North Battleford’s Andrew Albers and Team Canada were in action last week at the World Baseball Classic.
After an opening victory over Great Britain, Canada fell to the United States before bouncing back with a win against Colombia. However, Canada’s championship hopes were dashed as they fell to Mexico 10-3 the following day.
