Norsten named Rookie of the Year in rugby  

Carissa Norsten, who hails from Waldheim, was named the 2024 HSBC SVNS Women’s Rookie of the Year. 

The Canadian women’s sevens rugby player left a mark in the first match of the 2024 series in Dubai, when she scored the winning point in overtime against the United States. Following her initial performance, Norsten played in seven of the eight tournaments and went on to score eight tries. 

Borgerson to attend as shooting coach at Olympic Games  

Fort Qu’Appelle local, Lisa Borgerson is set to accompany Canada’s shooting team at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.  

This will be Borgerson’s third appearance in a row, as she made her debut at the Rio Games in 2016 and then followed that up by attending the 2020 Games in Tokyo.

Fish, Doyon, Veeman to represent Canada’s National and NextGen teams 

Three Saskatchewan speed skaters were selected to represent Canada’s National and NextGen teams for the 2024-25 season. 

2022 Olympian Graeme Fish of Moose Jaw was once again selected to Canada’s national team, while fellow Moose Javian, Marc-André Doyon and Saskatoon’s Luca Veeman were named to the NextGen team. 

Joining the trio will be 34 other skaters who were selected based on their national and international results from last season. The elite athletes will train under world-class coaches with their respective teams at national training centres in Calgary and Quebec City. 

The national long track season will commence with the 2024 Canadian Long Track Championship, held from October 17-20 in Quebec City. 

The Canadian U23 Wrestling Championships concluded 

The 2024 U23 & Senior Canadian Wrestling Championships took place on May 25, in Calgary with some of Canada’s best wrestlers in attendance. 

Regina-born Aleah Nickel wrestled with Edmonton Wrestling Club team and finished first in the senior women’s 74-kilogram weight class as well as in the U23 women’s 65-kg category. 

Members of the Saskatoon Wrestling Club were also in attendance at the event, with Andrew Johnson finishing first in the senior men’s 92-kg class and Donovan Neudorf finished third in the U23 men’s 61-kg class, while SueAnne Harms placed third in the senior women’s 59-kg class and Sierra Mullin finished sixth in the U23 women’s 55-kg.
