Multiple Sask athletes crack national water polo rosters

Five Saskatchewan water polo athletes will be joining the men’s and women’s Canadian teams when they compete at the U15 Pan American Championships from Sept. 1-7 in Brazil.

The women’s side will feature Regina’s Dylan Martens, Clara Milleker Shykiak and Alexis Rotheisler, as well as Estevan’s Jennika Linthicum, while Regina’s Sebastian Reyna will be the only Saskatchewan player on the men’s team.

Both Canadian teams will open the Championships with round robin action against Argentina, Brazil and the United States.

Canada finishes 13th at women’s U20 Water Polo Championship

Sydney Krushen and Makayla Ulmer-Lutudromu, both of Regina, helped Canada reach 13th in the standings at the World Aquatics Women’s U20 Water Polo Championships Aug. 10-15 in Salvador, Brazil.

Canada began the event in Group D where they suffered round robin losses of 12-8 and 9-4 against China and Australia, respectively, before winning 14-8 over South Africa.

That 1-2 record dropped the team to Group E where they went on a winning streak defeating Mexico 19-8, South Africa 12-4 and wrapped things up with a 19-8 win against Argentina.

Ostepchuk, Sopotyk fourth with Canada

The Canadian men’s wheelchair basketball team, featuring Regina’s Garrett Ostepchuk and Aberdeen’s Kyrell Sopotyk, are returning home after finishing fourth at the IWBF Americas Cup in Bogota.

In the bronze-medal match on Aug. 21, Canada fell by just one point, losing 48-47 to Colombia.

Earlier in the tournament, Canada went 2-1 in the round robin before advancing to quarterfinals where they defeated Mexico 63-47, but fell to the United States 70-57 in the semifinals.

The tournament serves as a qualifier for the 2026 IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships which will take place in Ottawa. As the host nation, Canada has already qualified.

Saskatchewan athletes medal at Junior Pan American Games

Team Canada wrapped up their time at the Junior Pan American Games in Paraguay on Aug. 23, capturing a total of 63 medals (19 gold, 21 silver and 23 bronze), with Saskatchewan athletes contributing to five of them.

Meadow Lake’s Avery Pearson doubled up, capturing gold as a member of the women’s 4×400-metre relay team as well as silver in the women’s 800-m in athletics, while Regina’s Jade Belmore and Prince Albert’s Gage Grassick teamed up as part of the Canadian women’s 3×3 basketball team that claimed gold, Saskatoon’s Elle Douglas joined the women’s sevens rugby team that battled to a bronze medal and Regina’s Molly Lakustiak was a part of the silver-medal winning triathlon mixed relay team.

Senft, Canada win Women’s Rugby World Cup opener

It was a decisive victory for Canada in their opening match of the Women’s Rugby World Cup in England as they defeated Fiji 65-7 on Friday.

Regina’s Gabrielle Senft started the game for the Canadian squad, earning her 34th cap in the process.

Next up, Canada will face Wales on Aug. 30 before wrapping up pool play against Scotland on Sept. 6.

Team Sask finishes sixth in medal standings at Canada Summer Games

The second week of the Canada Summer Games in St. John’s marked a stellar performance by Team Sask as they captured 44 of their total 48 medals (13 gold, 14 silver and 21 bronze) to finish sixth overall in the standings.

Diver Lila Stewart and Para ambulatory runner Brendan Cote Williamson, who are both CSCS athletes, led the Saskatchewan contingent in the Closing Ceremonies as flag bearers.

Stewart captured four medals at the Games, including three gold in the women’s artistic, one-metre springboard and team diving events, as well as a bronze in the three-m springboard, while Cote Williamson won double gold in the men’s 100- and 400-m events.
