Hector wins bronze at Youth Parapan American Games
Canada captured its first medal at the Youth Parapan American Games in Chile thanks to a bronze-medal performance by Saskatoon’s Thulir Hector in the women’s S8-10 singles Para table tennis competition.
After winning both of her preliminary round matches, Hector defeated Mexico’s Edith Pina Zapata 3-0 in quarterfinals before falling to Brazil’s Sophia Kelmer 3-1 in the semifinals.
Canadian men’s wheelchair basketball team undefeated in Chile
A dominating 78-14 victory over Chile on Tuesday boosted the Canadian men’s 5-on-5 wheelchair basketball team to a 4-0 record at the Youth Parapan American Games in Chile.
The Canadian squad, which features Saskatoon’s Lucas Floer on the roster and Saskatoon’s Jared Sajtos as an assistant coach, opened the event with wins of 53-51 against Chile, 81-28 over Mexico and 76-34 versus Brazil.
They’ll wrap up round robin play against Argentina on Wednesday.
Saskatchewan well represented at international ringette events
The Canadian junior and U18 ringette teams will include Saskatchewan individuals both on the ice and behind the bench while in Finland this week.
Joining the junior squad competing at the World Ringette Championships will be Regina’s Lauren Schoenhofen at centre, with Regina’s Donnell Schoenhofen on the bench as an assistant coach.
Meanwhile, player Brigette Parks and assistant coach Dania Seymour, both of Regina will join the U18 team at a development festival.
Two Sask athletes competing at Continental Cup
Regina’s Ella Grapentine and Kipling’s Shayla Byrnell will join forces with the Canadian U17 volleyball team when they compete at the NORECA Continental Championship in Costa Rica Nov. 4-9.
Playing in Group A, Canada will open the event against the Dominican Republic on Nov. 4, take on Costa Rica Nov. 5 and wrap up the preliminary round against Suriname on Nov. 6.
Playoffs are scheduled to start Nov. 7 with the top three teams from each pool moving on to compete for medals, while the remaining teams drop to the classification round.
Norsten captures top U SPORTS honour
Waldheim’s Carissa Norsten was named the U SPORTS women’s rugby most valuable player last week during the season’s awards banquet.
Norsten, who plays for University of Victoria Vikes led her team with eight tries this season, including three in Canada West playoffs.
Speaking of playoffs, Norsten and the Vikes claimed silver at the U SPORTS championship on November 2, falling narrowly to 15-13 to the defending champion UBC Thunderbirds.
Fish to represent Canada at World Cup events
Moose Jaw’s Graeme Fish has been announced as part of the team that will compete for Canada at the first two ISU World Cup Speed Skating events of the 2025-26 season.
That includes a stop in Salt Lake City Nov. 14-16, as well as an event at home Calgary’s Olympic Oval Nov. 21-23.
More World Cup events will be held in December, with each performance earning points to secure Olympic quota spots for Canada at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milano-Cortina.
Churchman, Olson to accompany Commonwealth Games team
The Canadian swimming team that will compete at the 2026 Commonwealth Games will have some help behind the scenes from a pair of Saskatchewan individuals.
Saskatoon’s Monty Churchman and Graham Olson will join the team in the roles of massage therapist and race analyst, respectively, from July 23-August 2 in Glasgow.
