Coaching staff announced for 2023 Junior Women’s National Team

The coaching staff for the 2023 Junior Women’s National for softball features two Saskatchewan coaches, head coach Keith Mackintosh from Melfort and Trevor Ethier from Saskatoon.

Mackintosh has returned for his fifth year with the Junior Women’s team and third as head coach. He led Team Canada to their first medal, a bronze, at the Junior Women’s U19 World Cup in 2019.

Ethier has been a member of the Junior Women’s coaching staff for six years and was also a part of the 2019 squad.

Ethan Bear joins Canada’s National Men’s Team at 2023 IIHF World Championship

Regina defenceman Ethan Bear will be one of 20 players representing Canada when the national team competes at the IIHF World Championship from May 12 to 28 in Tampere, Finland, Latvia and Riga.

Bear, who last played for Team Canada the U18 World Junior Championship in 2015, has 16 goals and 63 points recorded from his five seasons with the NHL.

2023 NCL 15U Western National Championships announce award winners

Nash Porter from Regina earned the boy’s Most Valuable Defensive Player award following the conclusion of the 2023 NCL 15U Western National Championship in Calgary on April 30.

Shelby Newkirk breaks Canadian record

Saskatoon Para swimmer Shelby Newkirk broke a Canadian record in 50-metre backstroke for the S6 sport class with a time of 38.54 seconds at the 2023 Laser LC Invitational Swim meet, Apr. 28-30 at the Shaw Centre.

Previously, Newkirk won gold in the 100-m backstroke S6 at the Madeira 2022 World Para Swimming Championships and attended the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. She has a history of setting new Canadian records including the 2022 Bell Canadian Swimming Trials, when she set records in the 50-m and 100-m in backstroke, and the 100 free.

McDonald joining Team Canada for World Para Hockey Championship

Regina’s Kyle McDonald has been announced as the Mental Performance Consultant for the Canadian Para Hockey team that will be competing at the upcoming World Championship May 28 to June 4.

The event will be close to home for McDonald as the eight teams competing in the championship will be heading to Moose Jaw.

Team Canada has been announced for the 2023 World Aquatics Women’s Junior Championship

Water Polo Canada has announced Team Canada’s roster for the 2023 World Aquatics Women’s Junior Championshipwhich is set to be held September 8-15 in Coimbra, Portugal.

Representing Saskatchewan will be Mikayla Hack and Simone Lapierre from Regina. In 2022, Regina Water Polo named Mikayla Hack the most valuable defensive player and Simone Lapierre most valuable goalie.

Canada’s co-chefs de mission for the 2023 Parapan Am Games and 2024 Paralympic Games are announced

The Canadian Paralympic Committee announced Karolina Wisniewska, former Para alpine skiing medallist and Josh Vander Viesas the co-chefs de missionfor the Santiago 2023 Parapan Am Games and 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.
