Newkirk, Ens qualify for 2023 World Para Swimming Championships

After impressive performances at the national swimming trials, Saskatoon’s Shelby Newkirk and Meadow Lake’s Nikita Ens are among the 13 Canadian swimmers that have qualified for the 2023 World Para Swimming Championships in Manchester, England set to take place July 31-Aug. 6.

Both Ens and Newkirk are coming off strong performances at the national swimming trials in Toronto over the last week. Newkirk won the women’s 100-metre MC backstroke and the women’s MC 50-m freestyle. She also placed second in the 100-m free. Meanwhile, Ens won silver in the women’s 150-m individual medley.

Newkirk will be among five Canadians looking to defend their title. Last summer in Portugal, she won the women’s 100 backstroke. Saskatoon Lasers swim coach Ryan Jones will also be accompanying the team in 2023 as a national coach.
