Team Canada came in fifth at the 2023 Cadet U17 Pan-American Championships

Fifteen wrestlers represented Canada at the 2023 Cadet U17 Pan-American Championships from June 22-24 in Mexico City.

Accompanying the elite athletes was coach Dean Schmeichel from Prince Albert. Under his guidance, Team Canada placed fifth overall in the freestyle category, below Peru.

Canada beat Ecuador 10-0 in the quarter-final, repeating the ten-to-zero score in semifinals against Mexico. In the final match for gold, Canada lost 10-0 to the USA.

Canada misses out on qualifying game for the 2023 Pan Am Games

Pitcher Andrew Albers from North Battleford, accompanied by the support of Regina’s Dustin Molleken as coach, helped Canada to a tied first-place position with Panama and Argentina at the WBSC Americas qualifier. In the last game of round robin, Canada defeated Honduras with a clean score of 10-0 and finished with a 3-1 record.

Due to the three-team-tie, the tournament implemented their tie-break system leaving Canada to finish in third and miss out on the Pan Am qualifying game.
