Local athletes to Pan-Am Games

Tim Landeryou, Kris Odegard and Brandi Jacobson Prentice, all of Saskatoon, have earned spots to represent Canada in racquetball at the Pan-American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, in October. They qualified during the weekend at the Canadian racquetball championships in Port Hawkesbury and Antigonish, N.S. Landeryou finished fourth in men's singles and doubles, while Odegard placed third in men's open singles and fourth in doubles. Jacobson prentice placed fourth in women's open singles and second in doubles.

Jayd Lukenchuk of the Saskatoon Taiso Club reac the apparatus final in four of six events in the senior division, highlighted by a second-place finish in vau at the Canadian gymnastics championships in Char lottetown, P.E.I.

Rusty Malinoski of Humboldt won a bronze in wakeboard at the 52nd U.S. Masters water ski and wakeboard championships in Callaway Gardens, Ga. . . . Kia Byers of Regina was 12th in the women's K1 200 me tres at a World Cup canoe and kayak meet in Duisbug, Germany. . . . Novak Djokovic of Croatia powere into the quarter-finals at the French Open tennis tour ment when he defeated Richard Gasquet of France 6-4,6-4,6-2. The win was Djokovic's 41st straight, one short of the record held by John McEnroe of the U.S.

The score was lopsided and there was a clear winner, but Sunday's matchup between the Saskatoon Valkyries and the Regina Riot was a win for women's sports in the city.

Michael Qing selected to Canadian Squad for 2011 Pan-Pacific Para-swimming Championships
Thirty-five Canadian Para-swimmers have secured their spot to compete this summer as part of Team Canada at the inaugural Pan-Pacific Para-swimming Championships in Edmonton, Alberta from August 10-14, 2011. Regina Optimist Dolphin Swimmer Michael Qing has been selected to the team.

Two paddlers with ties to Regina recorded top-10 finishes on the weekend at the International Canoe Federation's World Cup 2 event in Racice, Czech Republic. Kia Byers of Regina finished ninth in the women's K-1 200-metre event. Byers posted second-place finishes in her heat and in a semifinal to reach the final. Aaron Rublee, a former resident of Regina who now lives in Oakville, Ont., managed a ninth-place finish in the men's C-1 200m.

The only thing more heartbreaking than losing a championship is losing one at home. But Team Saskatchewan has to console itself with silver after it fell 51-33 to the Ontario Lightning at the national wheelchair rugby championships Sunday at the PAC.

Cole Miller is eager to make a splash in a larger pool. The 17-year-old Regina product has accepted a full-ride athletic scholarship to the University of South Carolina in Columbia. He's slated to graduate this spring from Sheldon-Williams Collegiate and move on to university in the fall, at which point he'll join the school's NCAA diving team.

Saskatoon gymast finishes strong

Capping off a strong tournament, Saskatonian Jayd Lukenchuk, representing team Canada's gymnastics team, finished seventh in the high bar on the final day of competition at the Chinese national championships. Team Canada, which returns home today, became the first foreign nation ever invited to attend the Chinese championships.

Kia Byers of Regina's Wascana Racing Canoe Club has been named to the Canadian women's kayak team that will take part in World Cup competition later this month.

City wrestlers get medals in Colombia

Saskatonians captured gold, silver and bronze medals at the senior Pan American wrestling championships in Rionegro, Colombia, on the weekend. Megan Buydens captured the gold medal in the women's 67-kilogram event while Ryley Walker won silver in men's 60 kg and Jeff Adamson the bronze in the men's 84 kg event. Walker and Adamson qualified in their weight classes for the Pan American games in Mexico in October.
