Saskatoon wrestler first in Ont

Ryley Walker of the Saskatoon Wrestling Club won the division title in the men's 60 kg class at the Guelph Open in Guelph, Ont., during the weekend. The Guelph Open is one of the largest meets in Canada and features top wrestlers battling for national carding, which is money used for training and development. Ashley McKilligan was third in the women's 48 kg event and Vanessa Brown sixth in women's 51 kg. Ryan Myrfield of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies had a 3-2 record in men's 74 kg and did not place in the standings.

Saskatchewan's Paige Lawrence and Rudy Swiegers came within a few points of nabbing the second spot on the world team, but the duo fell short during the BMO Canadian figure skating championships pairs competition on Saturday.

Kyle makes the Canadian National team for Chongqing Tournament

Saskatoon's Kaylyn Kyle has makes the Chongqing Tournament in China. Coach Carolina Morace has called 24 players to the team that will train and compete in Chongqing, China from 13-26 January. The four-team tournament features top-10 nations Canada, Sweden and USA as well as host China PR.

Cesar once again makes the Canadian U23 Team

Canada's men's U-23 / Olympic team will hold a 10-day training camp this 13-22 January in Phoenix, AZ. Coach Tony Fonseca has selected 20 players for the camp featuring players born 1989 or later.

Holland sees all sides of her sport

Amber Holland is of two minds when it comes to the Saskatchewan women's curling playdowns. Holland is the executive director of the Saskatchewan Curling Association and is concerned about the number of participants pursuing a SaskPower Saskatchewan women's championship. Holland is also the defending provincial women's champion and has a different view of the playdowns from that side of the house.

Regina's Lucas Makowsky is barely one year removed from qualifying for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Within two months of earning a spot on the Canadian Olympic team, Makowsky was a gold medallist.

The Canadian men's biathlon team opened its IBU World Cup season in Germany with an 11th-place finish Wednesday. The Canadian team of Regina's Scott Perras, Marc-Andre Bedard of Valcartier, Que., Jean-Philippe Le Guellec of Shannon, Que., and Brendan Green of Hay River, N.W.T., finished the 4x7.5-kilometre course in one hour 27 minutes 25.8 seconds. Germany finished first in 1:23:52.0, the Czech Republic was second in 1:26:15.8 and Norway was third in 1:26:17.0.
Byers benefits from fund

Kia Byers and other elite Canadian athletes could use some post-Christmas gifts. Byers, a Regina-born kayaker, is among the beneficiaries of the Canadian Athletes Now Fund. The fund raises money for athletes who are working toward representing Canada at the Olympics. The money helps to offset costs of living, coaching, nutrition, training or travelling to and from national and international events.

Three members of the Saskatoon Cyclones Road and Track Club are on the Canadian team for the International Paralympic Committee world track and field championships, Jan. 11 to 30 in Christchurch, New Zealand. Alexandre Dupont, Keira-Lyn Frie and Kyle Shaw are coached in Saskatoon by Rick Reelie.
